How many times have we pondered over the question that can we really be good in all the things we’re trying? Wouldn’t it be better to just focus on one single thing that we’re best at?

I myself was stuck on this question for quite long but now I think I have a conclusion.

When I was young, I thought how the hell am I supposed to do Painting and Singing along with my Studies. To me focusing on one single thing was the best way. And I wasn’t particularly interested in any of those either so more reason to not do them. Therefore I quit singing after 1 year and Painting after 4th year, as my studies started to take more of my time. That was then, it seemed to me the best decision.

When I started to think about my carrier and was exploring different domains I started to develop a desire to learn more than one of them. I even wanted to complete my painting and also learn guitar. It was then when I realized that now I totally contradict with my past self. The one who thought focusing on too many things will make you achieve none seemed to be somehow demotivating. I wasn’t sure which way should I proceed until I had a conversation with Mr. Harishankaran Karunanidhi, Co-founder and CTO of hackerrank.com, btw a brilliant personality.

He said that in today’s world becoming a specialist is not a smart thing to do. Learn both Java and UX design, Web development and Android Development, C++ and Cloud Computing, there’s no way you can thrive in this industry without being a generalist. Even if you only make back-end for Web apps, you will only be a stick in the mud if you don’t have any idea about how the front-end works. Every developer should have a sense of design.

His words made me crystal clear with what way I should proceed and I believe that you would have found the answer as well. You don’t need to be “only” a Tech guy, you can also be an art guy as well.

Specialization is a thing of the past, Gen Z is focusing on becoming Generalists.
